Foundry mechanic

The training objective of the foundry mechanic apprenticeship is to become an operator and fitter of state-of-the-art CNC-controlled hot-chamber die-casting machines produced by the companies FRECH and URPE.

The apprenticeship begins in the month of September. The apprenticeship lasts for 3.5 years. The basic training year - focussing on metal, takes place at the vocational training centre in Döbeln and is included in the apprenticeship time.

Intensive teaching sessions are held in the Berufsschulzentrum für Technik und Wirtschaft Freital / Freital Vocational Training Centre for Technology and Economics (accommodation available) in the form of two week courses, attended 6-7 times throughout the year. Practical training is delivered within the company.

Special training content, relating, for example, to the welding of metals and to pneumatics and electro-pneumatics, or additional qualifications are taught outside the company within the Vocational Training Network (Ausbildungsverbund).


Training content:

1st year of training (basic professional training year)
  • Acquisition of comprehensive knowledge of metalworking
  • Turning, milling, grinding, engraving, parting, forming, joining

2nd year of training
  • Moving between all departments
  • Practical training delivered within the 2-shift system (from 18 years of age: deployment within the 3-shift system possible)
  • Additional qualifications, such as authorisation to use lifting equipment or the operation of the central smelting system, will be taught independently within the company by means of training courses
  • Part I of the proficiency test and of the assessment test is conducted by the IHK

3rd year of training
  • Occupational safety, quality control and environmental protection in accordance with the certified operational management system
  • Enhancement of acquired knowledge and skills
  • Initiating, monitoring and documenting casting processes
  • Detecting casting defects and correcting the causes

The practical examination includes the injection of die-cast parts, including the preparatory machine and tuning work.
